First released way back in 1931, the Oyster Perpetual is a Rolex watch in its purest form. It was the first waterproof, self-winding wristwatch to use the patented rotor system that has been the blueprint of almost every subsequent watch in the Rolex catalogue. That’s why you’ll notice the words Oyster Perpetual emblazoned on the dial of most of today’s watches.

The combination of the waterproof Oyster case design and a self winding movement led to a watch case so perfect and versatile that Rolex decided to use it as the basis of the majority of their future models. The Submariner, GMT Master, Milgauss and Explorer all share the Oyster Perpetual DNA, adding features or modifications where needed to suit the intended use.
